Tourism is one of the largest, most dynamic, and fastest developing economic sectors in the world. The Dubai Tourism Strategy 2020 has aimed at attracting 20 million visitors a year by 2020 and making Dubai the first-choice destination for both international leisure and business travelers.
Dubai Expo 2020 was originally scheduled to be hosted from October 20th, 2020 to April 10th, 2021 but was postponed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will take place between October 1st, 2021 and March 31st, 2022 and aims at helping shape the world post-pandemic. It is expecting to attract 25 million visitors over a period of six months, out of which 70% will be from outside the UAE. Over 190 participating nations will be involved, including multilateral organizations, businesses and educational institutions.
The hospitality and tourism industry are going to be significantly affected, after experiencing heavy travel restrictions during 2020, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Dubai government has estimated that up to 45,000 hotel rooms to be added to the existing 82,000 room supply, will be required in Dubai in order to accommodate the large number of non-UAE visitors. Moreover, despite the huge number of hotels in Dubai today, very few are close to the Dubai Expo 2020 site, and currently few focus on the important mid-range sector.
Not only new hotels and accommodations are being launched. The Expo 2020 site spans 4.38 square kilometers and is located in the Dubai South district, close to Al Maktoum International Airport, Dubai International Airport, Abu Dhabi International Airport and Dubai and Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminals. The site will also have its own metro station, large enough to transport 36,000 passengers per hour. New buses and new roads have been developed, in order to help visitors reach this major event.
